Knee Decompression Therapy in Laguna Niguel
Is knee pain making stairs, walking, or standing up from a chair something you think about before you do it? Knee decompression is a non-surgical way to take pressure off a joint that has been carrying too much of it for too long. At Divine Healing Chiropractic in Laguna Niguel, Dr. Azien Mousavi uses gentle, controlled traction to create space inside the knee — a drug-free option for patients who want to address worn, painful knees without surgery.

How it works
What to expect with knee decompression therapy
- Step 1
Exam and candidacy
We examine the knee, review your history and any imaging, and confirm whether decompression is appropriate for what is actually driving your pain — and say so plainly if it isn't.
- Step 2
The decompression session
You rest comfortably while the unit applies gentle, cycling traction across the knee. Most patients find it relaxing rather than uncomfortable, and there is no downtime afterward.
- Step 3
A combined care plan
Decompression works best as part of a plan. We commonly pair it with PEMF, laser therapy, and work on the hip and ankle mechanics that load the knee in the first place.
Why patients choose it
Benefits of knee decompression therapy
Takes compressive load off a worn, painful knee joint
Creates space between the joint surfaces
Encourages fluid and nutrient exchange in compressed cartilage
Non-surgical and drug-free — no needles, no incisions
Comfortable sessions with no downtime afterward
Pairs naturally with PEMF, laser, and shockwave therapy
The basics
About knee decompression therapy
Your knee carries load with almost every step you take. Over the years — through wear, an old injury, extra body weight, or simply time — the space between the joint surfaces narrows and the cartilage that cushions them gets compressed. Less space means more friction, and cartilage has very little blood supply of its own, so it depends on movement and changes in pressure to draw in the fluid and nutrients it needs. When a knee is constantly loaded, that exchange slows down.
Knee decompression works on exactly that problem. Gentle traction is applied across the joint in cycles, easing the surfaces apart and then releasing. The intent is to reduce the compressive load, create a little more room inside the joint, and encourage the fluid exchange that compressed cartilage misses out on. It is non-invasive, requires no needles or incisions, and there is no downtime afterward. It is not a cure for arthritis or a replacement for surgery when surgery is genuinely needed — Dr. Mousavi will tell you honestly which situation you are in.

Why knees wear out
The knee is a weight-bearing joint doing a demanding job. Every step, stair, and squat sends load through a relatively small contact area, cushioned by cartilage that has no direct blood supply of its own. That cartilage stays healthy through movement — load and unload, compress and release — which pumps fluid and nutrients in and waste out.
When a knee is under constant compression, that pump slows down. The joint space narrows, friction increases, and the tissue that is supposed to absorb shock gets less of what it needs to maintain itself. It’s a cycle that tends to reinforce itself: the knee hurts, so you move it less, so it gets even less of the movement it depends on.
How knee decompression works
Knee decompression interrupts that cycle mechanically. You sit with the leg secured in a Knee on Trac decompression unit, which applies gentle traction across the joint, cycling on and off rather than pulling continuously. Easing the joint surfaces apart reduces the compressive load, opens up a little space inside the joint, and encourages the fluid exchange that a constantly loaded knee misses. The short video above walks through exactly what that looks like.
The session itself is undemanding — you rest while the unit does the work, and most patients find it comfortable. There are no needles, no incisions, and no recovery period afterward.
What to expect
Your first visit starts with an exam, not a treatment. Dr. Mousavi looks at how the knee moves, what makes it worse, your history, and any imaging you have. Knee pain isn’t always coming from the knee — hip mechanics, ankle restriction, and the way you load the leg all matter — so the exam looks past the painful spot.
If decompression is a good fit, you’ll get a specific, time-bound plan with a clear endpoint. If it isn’t, we’ll say so and point you toward what actually helps, including a surgical opinion when that’s genuinely the right call.
Who it may help
We most often consider knee decompression for patients dealing with:
- Knee pain that has become part of everyday life — stairs, kneeling, or standing up from a chair
- Arthritis and degenerative change in the knee joint
- Worn or compressed cartilage, where the goal is to unload the joint rather than replace it
- Stiffness and leg pain lingering after an older injury
- A sports injury that has left the knee sore and restricted
Why choose Divine Healing Chiropractic
Patients across Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, and Laguna Hills come to us for knees because we treat the joint and the mechanics loading it, not just the sore spot. Dr. Azien Mousavi combines knee decompression with PEMF therapy and laser therapy — and she is straightforward about what conservative care can and cannot do for a given knee.
If your knee is deciding what you do each day, that’s worth an exam. Visit our New Patients page to see what a first visit involves, or contact us to book.

Every condition below is treated at our Laguna Niguel office. Tap any one to read how we approach it.
What is knee decompression therapy?+
Knee decompression is a non-surgical therapy that applies gentle, cycling traction across the knee joint. The goal is to reduce the compressive load on the joint, create a little more space between the surfaces, and encourage the fluid exchange that compressed cartilage relies on.
Does knee decompression hurt?+
It shouldn't. The traction is gentle and applied in cycles, and most patients describe the session as comfortable or even relaxing. Tell us at any point if something doesn't feel right and we'll adjust it.
What conditions is knee decompression used for?+
It's most often considered for knee osteoarthritis, worn or degenerated cartilage, chronic knee pain, and stiffness lingering after an old injury. Your exam determines whether it's the right fit for your knee specifically.
How many sessions will I need?+
That depends on your knee and how long the problem has been there. After the exam, Dr. Mousavi will give you a specific, time-bound plan with a clear endpoint rather than open-ended treatment.
Is it a replacement for knee surgery?+
No. Knee decompression is a conservative, non-surgical option to try before or alongside other care, and some knees genuinely need a surgical opinion. If yours is one of them, we'll tell you honestly and help you get the right referral.
Can it be combined with other therapies?+
Yes, and it usually is. We commonly pair knee decompression with PEMF therapy and laser therapy, and address the hip and ankle mechanics loading the knee, so the joint gets relief and the cause gets addressed.
Who isn't a candidate for knee decompression?+
Certain situations — recent fracture, an active infection or blood clot in the leg, joint replacement hardware, or significant instability — mean traction isn't appropriate. That's exactly what the exam and intake screen for before anything begins.
Will my insurance cover knee decompression?+
Coverage varies widely by plan. Share your insurance details before your first visit and our staff will verify your benefits and explain any out-of-pocket cost, at no charge. Affordable self-pay options are available.
