Myofascial Release in Laguna Niguel

In addition to muscles, tendons, and ligaments, your body contains a type of connective tissue known as fascia. The fascia covers these other tissues and weaves its way through them like a membranous web. This arrangement means that when fascia develops problems, the underlying tissues often suffer the effects.

How Myofascial Release works at Divine Healing Chiropractic

How it works

What to expect with myofascial release

  1. Step 1

    Finding the restriction

Your practitioner feels for the knots and hard spots in the fascia that are limiting motion and referring pain elsewhere in the body.

  2. Step 2

    Gentle, sustained pressure

Targeted manipulation forces the tissue to unclench, improving blood and lymphatic circulation and stimulating the stretch reflex in the muscle.

  3. Step 3

    Holding the correction

Between adjustment sessions, ongoing myofascial release keeps your tissues from tightening up again — and we can show you simple self-release using a foam roller at home.

The basics

About myofascial release

Myofascial pain syndrome may stem from issues such as poor posture or uncorrected spinal alignment errors that place your tissue under constant, unnatural stress. The fascia may tighten up, limiting muscle motion painfully. Your tissues may also develop painful knots called trigger points. These knots of tight tissue can pinch nerves, sending referred pain to remote areas such as the extremities.

Myofascial release offers a drug-free, non-invasive technique for relaxing these areas of tightness. In this form of massage, your practitioner feels for knots or hard spots that need breaking up. Targeted manipulation of these areas can force the tissue to unclench, freeing your body to work as it should and easing referred pain symptoms. It uses gentle, sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to relax contracted muscles, improve blood and lymphatic circulation, and stimulate the stretch reflex in muscles.

Benefits of myofascial release

Graston Technique and instrument-assisted release

Some restrictions sit too deep, or are too broad, for hands alone to reach effectively. For those, Dr. Mousavi uses instrument-assisted soft-tissue mobilisation — the Graston Technique — working stainless-steel instruments along the muscle and fascia.

The instrument does two things hands cannot. It lets her feel the texture of the restriction far more precisely, so she can find exactly where the fascia has thickened or bound down. And it concentrates pressure into a smaller area, which is what allows a stubborn adhesion to release.

Who it helps. Instrument-assisted work suits chronic tightness that has not responded to hands-on release, scar tissue from an old injury or surgery, tendon problems such as tennis elbow and Achilles pain, and the dense restriction that builds up along the low back and IT band. It is usually combined with hands-on release and adjustments rather than used on its own.

Some redness after treatment is normal and settles quickly — it reflects the increased blood flow the technique is intended to produce.

Combining chiropractic care with myofascial release

Chiropractic care and myofascial release work hand in hand to provide lasting relief. Dr. Azien Mousavi makes adjustments and corrects any alignment problems that make you more vulnerable to myofascial tightness and pain. Between chiropractic adjustment sessions, ongoing myofascial release sessions can keep your tissues from tightening up again.

This incremental approach not only helps you maintain optimal comfort and mobility; it also helps to preserve the corrections made by Dr. Mousavi, allowing you to get the greatest possible benefit from your adjustments. We can even show you how to self-administer simple kinds of myofascial release using a foam roller or other tools to help you keep your tissues limber.

Trigger point therapy

The use of massage for trigger point therapy on a regular basis can help naturally manage pain and stress from chronic injuries. Pressure is applied to a trigger point long enough to release and relax the muscle. This increases blood flow to the muscle to allow normalization and bring it back to a healthy state.

Myofascial Release FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

What is myofascial release?+

Myofascial release is a hands-on soft-tissue therapy that applies slow, sustained pressure to tight or restricted areas of the fascia — the connective tissue that surrounds your muscles. By holding a gentle stretch into each restriction, the therapist allows the tissue to soften and release, restoring movement and reducing pain.

Does myofascial release hurt?+

It shouldn't feel sharp or intense. Most patients describe a deep pressure or mild stretching sensation that gradually softens as the fascia lets go. We always work within your comfort level and adjust pressure based on your feedback.

How is myofascial release different from regular massage?+

Standard massage uses lotion or oil to glide over muscle tissue and improve circulation. Myofascial release uses no lubricant and applies a sustained hold — sometimes 90 seconds or longer — into the fascial barrier rather than moving across it. This allows a deeper, more lasting release of adhesions.

How many sessions will I need?+

It varies by condition and how long the restriction has been there. Many patients notice meaningful improvement within 3–6 sessions; chronic issues or fibromyalgia may benefit from a longer course. After your exam Dr. Mousavi gives you a clear, time-bound plan — not open-ended treatment.

Is myofascial release safe?+

Yes. It is a gentle, non-invasive, drug-free therapy. We perform a thorough intake and exam before beginning care, and myofascial release is safe for most adults including those recovering from injury, surgery, or chronic conditions.

What conditions does myofascial release help?+

It is especially helpful for chronic neck and back pain, shoulder tightness, fibromyalgia, headaches tied to fascial tension, post-surgical adhesions, and any recurring muscle tightness that keeps returning despite other treatment.

Will my insurance cover myofascial release?+

Coverage varies by plan. We accept many major insurance plans and offer affordable self-pay rates. Send us your insurance information and we'll verify your benefits before your first appointment.

How should I prepare for a myofascial release session?+

Wear or bring comfortable clothing you can move in. Arrive well-hydrated and let your therapist know about any recent injuries, surgeries, or tender areas. After a session, drink plenty of water and avoid intense exercise that day.

Can myofascial release be combined with chiropractic care?+

Absolutely — it works especially well alongside adjustments. Freeing the fascial restrictions around a joint makes the joint easier to adjust and helps the correction hold longer. Dr. Mousavi often integrates myofascial release as part of a broader care plan.

Is myofascial release suitable for fibromyalgia?+

Yes. Research suggests myofascial release can meaningfully reduce the widespread pain and sensitivity of fibromyalgia. The gentle, non-compressive nature of the technique makes it a well-tolerated option for patients who find deeper bodywork too uncomfortable.
