How Shockwave Therapy works at Divine Healing Chiropractic

How it works

What to expect with shockwave therapy

  1. Step 1

    Consultation and assessment

We start by identifying the areas you want to improve and confirming that shockwave therapy is an appropriate option for what your exam shows.

  2. Step 2

    The shockwave session

Sound waves are delivered deep into the affected tissue. Most patients describe it as feeling like a deep tissue massage, with some tenderness near bone.

  3. Step 3

    A course of treatment

Shockwave is typically delivered over a series of sessions and combined with adjustments, laser, or rehab so the injured area heals completely rather than just quieting down.

Why patients choose it

Benefits of shockwave therapy

Reduces pain and inflammation in stubborn, chronic injuries

Promotes new tissue growth and collagen production

Breaks up scar tissue and calcification

Restores mobility to stiff or degenerated areas

Non-invasive and surgery-free, with no downtime

The basics

About shockwave therapy

Shockwave therapy is a non-invasive treatment that uses sound waves to help heal the body. It can reduce inflammation, produce collagen, release growth factors, and break up calcification. Shockwave therapy doesn't require surgery or physical contact — instead, the sound waves go deep into the affected area to treat joints, tendons, inflammation, soft tissue, and scar tissue.

Patients say shockwave therapy feels like a deep tissue massage. There might be some tenderness, especially near bones. Most people tolerate the session well, and there is no downtime afterward.

Degeneration and injury: two common causes of pain

If you have regular pain, it might be due to degeneration or injury. Both are common, and untreated injuries often lead to faster degeneration.

Injury. Injuries can happen whether you’re active or not. Daily activities, sports, exercise, and even sitting too long can cause injuries. If injuries don’t heal properly, they can become inflamed, painful, and limit your movement. We treat many injuries with shockwave therapy, including tendonitis, neuropathy, scar tissue, overuse injuries, foot pain, heel pain, frozen shoulder, and Morton’s neuroma.

Degeneration. Degeneration happens when a part of the body, like a joint or cartilage, wears down. This can be due to overuse, underuse, poor nutrition, age, or genetics. Common degeneration issues we treat with shockwave therapy include arthritis, bone spurs, disc problems, joint pain, stiffness in hands and fingers, and knee pain.

What shockwave therapy is used for

Shockwave therapy is ideal for knee pain, shoulder pain, foot pain, calf muscle pain, anterior shin pain, and heel pain. Specific indications we treat include:

  • Overuse injuries and sports injuries
  • Arthritis, including joint and knee arthritis
  • Meniscus tears
  • Tendon injuries and Achilles tendinopathy
  • Plantar fasciitis, heel spurs, and posterior heel pain
  • Insertional Achilles tendonitis and peroneal tendonitis
  • Rotator cuff pain, frozen shoulder, and shoulder tendonitis
  • Tennis elbow, golfer’s elbow, and pitcher’s elbow pain
  • Runner’s knee and jumper’s knee
  • Wrist tendonitis and hip tendonitis
  • Hip bursitis and iliotibial (IT) band syndrome
  • Hamstring pain and shin splints
  • Bone spurs (exostosis) and breaking up scar tissue
  • Peripheral neuropathy
  • Morton’s neuroma, turf toe, and ball-of-foot pain
  • Baker’s cyst
  • TMJ and upper back pain

What are the benefits of shockwave therapy?

Shockwave therapy is very effective at reducing pain and inflammation, promoting new tissue growth, helping injured areas heal completely, and restoring mobility to stiff or degenerated areas. Published results for EPAT report a high rate of patient improvement across these indications.

If you want to see if shockwave therapy can help you, the team at Divine Healing Chiropractic is ready to meet you. Book your appointment today to start your consultation and assessment, identify the areas you want to improve, and begin your healing journey.

Shockwave Therapy FAQ

Still have questions? Contact us — we're happy to help.

What is shockwave therapy?+

Shockwave therapy (also called extracorporeal shockwave therapy or ESWT) uses a handheld device to send high-energy acoustic pressure waves through the skin into injured tendons or soft tissue. The waves stimulate blood flow, break down calcium deposits, and trigger the body's natural repair cycle in areas that have stalled.

Does shockwave therapy hurt?+

Most patients feel a deep pressure, vibration, or temporary ache during the session — especially over the most irritated spot. The sensation is usually very tolerable and fades within minutes of the treatment ending. We adjust intensity to your comfort level throughout.

How many shockwave sessions will I need?+

Most conditions respond well in 3–6 sessions spaced about a week apart. After your exam Dr. Mousavi will give you a realistic plan with a clear timeline based on your specific injury and how long you've had it.

Is shockwave therapy safe?+

Yes. It is a non-invasive, drug-free therapy supported by substantial research for tendinopathies. We screen every patient before starting — there are a small number of contraindications (such as blood-clotting disorders or active infection in the area) that your intake and exam will rule out.

Who is a good candidate for shockwave therapy?+

Patients with chronic tendon or soft-tissue injuries — plantar fasciitis, tennis elbow, shoulder tendinopathy, calcific deposits, or overuse injuries — who haven't responded fully to rest, stretching, or other conservative care are often excellent candidates. We confirm candidacy at your exam.

Can shockwave therapy help plantar fasciitis?+

Plantar fasciitis is one of the most studied and best-responding conditions for shockwave therapy. When stretching, orthotics, and rest haven't resolved the heel pain, shockwave often produces the healing response the tissue has been missing.

What is the recovery like after a session?+

There is no downtime. Some patients experience mild soreness in the treated area for 24–48 hours — similar to post-exercise soreness — which is a normal sign of the healing process starting. Most people return to normal daily activities immediately.

Will my insurance cover shockwave therapy?+

Coverage varies by plan. Many policies do not yet cover ESWT, though some do — particularly for plantar fasciitis. We'll check your benefits before your first visit and walk you through affordable self-pay options if needed.

How does shockwave therapy compare to cortisone injections?+

Cortisone reduces inflammation in the short term but does not repair the underlying tendon damage and can weaken tissue with repeated use. Shockwave stimulates genuine structural repair and in many studies shows better long-term outcomes for chronic tendinopathies without the risks of repeated injections.

Can shockwave be combined with other therapies?+

Absolutely — and it often works best as part of a broader plan. Dr. Mousavi commonly pairs shockwave with laser therapy, PEMF, or a targeted rehab program to accelerate healing and help results last.
