Chiropractic care for sciatica
Get to the root of your sciatica
Also known as: Sciatic Nerve Pain, Lumbar Radiculopathy
Sciatica is one of the conditions we treat most often at Divine Healing Chiropractic. In the lower spine, pinched sciatic nerve tissue can cause leg pain as well as lower back pain — which is why the ache running down the back of your leg so often traces back to your spine, not your leg.
Symptoms of sciatica
- ✓Sharp, burning, or electric pain running from the low back into the leg
- ✓Numbness or tingling down the back of the thigh, calf, or foot
- ✓Weakness in the leg or foot on the affected side
- ✓Pain that worsens with sitting, sneezing, or coughing
- ✓A constant ache in the hip or buttock
- ✓Shooting pain that makes it hard to stand or walk
- ✓Symptoms on one side only (occasionally both)
Common causes
- Herniated or bulging discs pressing on the nerve root
- Spinal discs flattening and bulging with age
- Spinal misalignments and pinched nerves
- Poor posture and musculoskeletal imbalance
- Acute injury that dislodges vertebrae or tears back muscles
- Spinal arthritis
- Auto accident and sports injuries

Our approach
How we treat sciatica in Laguna Niguel
- Step 1
Identify the alignment issue
Dr. Mousavi identifies any spinal alignment issues that might be causing or worsening your symptoms, using x-rays where they will change the plan.
- Step 2
Release the compressed nerve
Gentle, precise applications of force — either manually or through instruments — shift spinal components back into position, releasing compressed nerves and taking unnecessary strain off the muscles.
- Step 3
A combined plan
You may receive a comprehensive plan combining adjustments, non-surgical spinal decompression, massage, and lifestyle recommendations to strengthen your lower back and minimize the risk of recurrence.
The basics
Understanding sciatica
The lower back supports the entire upper half of the body, which represents a considerable weight. An acute injury can tear back muscles, dislodge vertebrae, or herniate discs in the lower back, while constant or repetitive strain from a musculoskeletal imbalance or poor posture can lead to chronic lower back strain. Chronic lower back pain also stems from natural changes in your physique: as you get older, your spinal discs can start to flatten and bulge, straining vertebral joints and pinching major nerve roots.
A skilled chiropractor can often save lower back pain sufferers from surgery or other extreme measures. Gentle, precise applications of force, either manually or through the use of instruments, can shift spinal components back into their proper position, releasing compressed nerves and taking unnecessary strain off the muscles.

What the sciatic nerve does
The sciatic nerve is the longest and thickest nerve in the body. It forms from nerve roots in the lower spine, runs through the buttock and down the back of the thigh, then branches below the knee to supply the lower leg and foot. It carries both the signals that move those muscles and the sensation coming back from them.
That anatomy explains why sciatica behaves the way it does. The problem is almost always at the top — where the nerve roots leave the spine — but the symptom shows up along the length of the nerve, which is why people arrive convinced the trouble is in their leg.
What sciatica actually feels like
Sciatica is a description of a pattern, not a diagnosis in itself. Most people report some combination of:
- Pain radiating from the lower back or buttock down one leg, often past the knee
- A sharp, electric, or burning quality rather than a dull ache
- Numbness or pins and needles in the leg, calf, or foot
- Weakness in the leg, or a foot that feels unreliable on stairs
- Symptoms that worsen with sitting, coughing, sneezing, or bending forward
- Pain on one side only — bilateral sciatica is less common and warrants a closer look
Symptoms in both legs, or any change in bladder or bowel control, need same-day medical assessment rather than a chiropractic appointment. We will say so plainly if that is what your exam suggests.
Why the sciatic nerve gets irritated
Lower back pain is practically inevitable at some point or another. The lower back supports the entire upper half of the body, which represents a considerable weight. An acute injury can tear back muscles, dislodge vertebrae, or herniate discs in the lower back. Constant or repetitive strain from a musculoskeletal imbalance or poor posture can lead to chronic lower back strain.
Chronic lower back pain often stems from natural changes in your physique. As you get older, your spinal discs can start to flatten and bulge, straining vertebral joints and pinching major nerve roots. In the lower spine, pinched sciatic nerve tissue can cause leg pain as well as lower back pain. Spinal arthritis is another cause of age-related lower back pain.
Pregnancy is another common trigger. The combination of added load, a shifting centre of gravity, and the hormonal softening of pelvic ligaments can irritate the sciatic nerve in the later trimesters — which is one of the more frequent reasons expectant patients come to see us. Chiropractic care during pregnancy is adapted specifically for this.
Stretches that help sciatic pain
These are the movements we most often send patients home with. They are gentle by design — none of them should reproduce the sharp, radiating pain. Ease off if any of them do, and check with us before starting if you are in an acute flare.
- Straight leg raise. Lying on your back, lift one straight leg until you feel a gentle pull behind the thigh. Hold, then lower slowly.
- Knee hug. On your back, draw one knee toward your chest and hold, keeping the other leg relaxed. Alternate sides.
- Knee across body. From the same position, guide the bent knee across toward the opposite hip to open the outside of the glute.
- Groin stretch. Sitting with the soles of your feet together, let the knees fall outward and lean forward from the hips.
- Hamstring stretch. Seated with one leg extended, hinge forward from the hips — not the low back — until you feel the stretch behind the thigh.
- Low back stretch. On your back with both knees bent, gently rock the knees side to side to free up the lumbar segments.
- Side stretch. Standing tall, reach one arm overhead and lean away from the painful side to lengthen the trunk.
Stretching manages the symptom. It does not correct the joint restriction or disc pressure irritating the nerve in the first place, which is why we pair home exercises with in-office care rather than offering them instead of it.
Chiropractic adjustments for sciatica: procedures and benefits
A skilled chiropractor can often save lower back pain sufferers from surgery or other extreme measures. Dr. Mousavi can identify any spinal alignment issues that might be causing or worsening your symptoms. Gentle, precise applications of force, either manually or through the use of instruments, can shift spinal components back into their proper position, releasing compressed nerves and taking the unnecessary strain off of muscles.
Chiropractors sometimes prescribe other forms of non-invasive treatment to enhance the effectiveness of these adjustments. You may receive a comprehensive treatment plan that includes some combination of chiropractic adjustments, physical therapy, massage, and lifestyle recommendations to help you strengthen your lower back, improve your flexibility, and minimize the risk of future back problems.
Non-surgical spinal decompression
At Divine Healing Chiropractic we use non-surgical spinal decompression to help treat back or neck pain, sciatica, bulging or herniated discs, worn spinal joints, and injured spinal nerve roots. Spinal decompression gently stretches the spine to change the force and position of the spine. By making this change, pressure is removed from the spinal discs and bulging or herniated discs may retract.

What causes sciatica?+
Sciatica happens when the sciatic nerve — the longest nerve in your body — is compressed or irritated, usually by a herniated disc, bone spur, or narrowed spinal canal in the lower lumbar spine. The nerve travels from the lower back through the buttock and down each leg, which is why even a small amount of pressure at the spine can cause pain, numbness, or tingling all the way to the foot.
How long does sciatica last?+
Mild cases can ease within a few weeks with proper care. Longer-standing sciatica — especially from a herniated disc or stenosis — typically takes several months of consistent treatment. Skipping care or waiting it out often allows the underlying disc or joint problem to worsen, which extends recovery. Starting treatment early usually means a faster, fuller result.
How can I relieve sciatica pain at home?+
Gentle walking, ice on the lower back for the first 48–72 hours, heat after that, and avoiding prolonged sitting all help manage symptoms. Light piriformis and hip-flexor stretches can take tension off the nerve. That said, home care treats the symptom — not the disc or joint causing it. If your pain lasts more than a week or two, worsens, or affects both legs, book an exam so we can address the source.
When should I see a chiropractor for sciatica?+
If leg pain, numbness, or tingling persists more than a week, limits your daily activities, or keeps coming back, it's time for an exam. Early care almost always means a faster recovery and a lower chance of the problem becoming chronic.
Is chiropractic safe for sciatic nerve pain?+
Yes, for most people. We screen every patient on the first visit with orthopedic and neurological testing. Gentle adjustments and soft-tissue care are very well tolerated by good candidates. We'll be upfront if you need a different approach — including a referral — and we never begin care until we've confirmed you're a suitable candidate.
What does conservative chiropractic care for sciatica involve?+
We combine gentle spinal adjustments that restore normal joint motion with soft-tissue work — massage and myofascial release — to relax the muscles irritating the nerve. Targeted corrective exercise then rebuilds core and hip stability, and supportive modalities like laser, shockwave, or PEMF therapy can calm inflammation — all without needles, drugs, or surgery.
Will insurance cover sciatica treatment?+
We accept many major insurance plans and offer self-pay options. Send us your insurance information and we'll verify your benefits before your first visit so there are no surprises.
Are there any warning signs I should go to the ER instead?+
Yes. Loss of bladder or bowel control, numbness in the groin or inner thighs, or rapidly progressing weakness in both legs are red flags for a serious condition called cauda equina syndrome and require emergency evaluation immediately — not a chiropractic appointment. Call 911 or go to the ER right away.
Can sciatica come back after treatment?+
It can, especially if the underlying disc weakness or posture habits aren't corrected. That's why our plans include rehab — not just pain relief. Patients who complete their corrective phase and maintain their home exercises have a significantly lower rate of recurrence.
Do you treat sciatica for patients from Mission Viejo or Laguna Hills?+
Absolutely. We serve patients from Laguna Niguel, Mission Viejo, Aliso Viejo, Dana Point, and Laguna Hills. Most patients from those areas find us very convenient to reach, and we keep scheduling flexible for busy schedules.
